How to reduce mold and allergens in your home.
You can cut down indoor allergens without harsh chemicals or a renovation. Learn where they settle, then deal with them on those surfaces.
The Complete Natural Guide

Allergens settle into your home and stay.
Mold spores, dust-mite allergens and pet dander are among the most common indoor allergens. They drift down out of the air and settle into your mattress, your carpet, your furniture and your walls.
In a modern sealed home, allergens that get in tend to stay. They build up on surfaces and recirculate through your HVAC, and each step across a carpet or fluff of a pillow stirs them back up.
You can reduce them without masks or industrial sprays once you know where they settle and work on those spots.

Allergen hotspots
Many indoor allergens drop out of the air and settle on surfaces.
Air filters hit their limit here. A high-quality HEPA air purifier captures only the particles that drift into it. It can't reach the mold behind your bathroom tiles, the dust mites in your mattress or the pet dander worked into your couch fabric.
You can run a filter all day and still sleep on a mattress full of allergens, because a large part of the problem sits on the surfaces around you.

What's building up
Four things that collect on the surfaces of most homes.
Dust mites
Microscopic arachnids living in mattresses, pillows, carpets and upholstery. Their waste proteins, Der p1 and Der f1, are among the best-known indoor allergens. A single gram of dust can contain thousands of waste particles.
Mold
You'll find spores in any indoor environment. They start to grow once they find moisture and organic matter: behind tiles, inside HVAC ducts, beneath flooring, in window frames, in walls.
Pet dander
Fel d1 and Can f1 are tiny protein particles that stay airborne for hours and cling to soft surfaces for months. Pet-free homes collect them too, carried in on clothing and by visitors.
Odor-causing bacteria
They feed on the organic residue on soft surfaces: dust, dander, shed skin, food traces. Footsteps stir that residue up, and it builds back soon after you clean.

Mold reduction
Mold needs moisture to grow, so fix the moisture first and the rest of the plan gets easier.
The limits of chemicals
Bleach, sprays and fragrances wear off fast and add fumes to the room.
Work only in the moment
Bleach and sprays act when you apply them. Within hours, bacteria and mold spores land on the same surface again, so a Monday spray leaves you back at square one by Wednesday.
Add to what's in the air
Bleach gives off chlorine fumes and fragrance products add VOCs, so you put irritants into the room while you clean it.
Favour the survivors
Use chemical biocides over and over and you can favour hardier organisms. The ones that survive each round can be tougher to remove next time.
Leave surfaces empty
A chemical wipe-down leaves the surface bare. The first organisms to land there have it to themselves, one reason residue and odor come back fast.

The probiotic advantage
One device that works on the surfaces where allergens and odor settle.
Instead of buying a separate product for each problem, you can run one EnviroBiotics device. It releases natural probiotics, Bacillus strains found in soil and plants, as a fine mist. They settle on soft surfaces like mattresses, bedding, sofas, rugs, curtains and pet beds, feed on the organic residue odor-causing bacteria depend on, and take up the space those bacteria would use, a process known as competitive exclusion.
In a 2024 controlled study, Indoor Biotechnologies (Cardiff, UK) applied the EnviroBiotics probiotic over 8 days and recorded a cumulative decrease in dust-mite, pet-dander and mold allergens, with a parallel simulation at EMSL Analytical (New Jersey). See the research.
Feed on the residue
The probiotics feed on dust, dander, shed skin and food traces: the organic residue odor-causing bacteria rely on, and the same debris dust mites live on.
Nothing extra in the room
No filters to replace, no fragrance and no ozone. You change one cartridge, and it lasts up to about 90 days.
Works with your cleaning
Keep up moisture control, washing and vacuuming. Probiotics work alongside them on the soft surfaces you can't deep-clean each week.
Take up the space
Through competitive exclusion, probiotics occupy the surface space odor-causing bacteria would otherwise use, so fewer of them build up where odor lives.
Your action plan
Five layers that work better together.
-
Environmental controls
Foundation, fix first. Keep relative humidity between 40 and 60 percent. Fix leaks right away. Improve ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens, basements and laundry rooms. Call a professional remediator for visible mold covering more than about 10 sq ft.
-
Physical reduction
Weekly maintenance. Encase mattresses and pillows. Wash bedding weekly in hot water, 130°F or above. HEPA-vacuum carpets and upholstery. Consider hard flooring in bedrooms where you can.
-
Source-based cleaning
Ongoing as needed. Use vinegar on small patches of mold on hard surfaces. Save harsh chemical cleaners for the jobs that need them. Wash the soft surfaces where pet dander collects.
-
Probiotic layer
Continuous, start now. Run an EnviroBiotics probiotic device. Natural Bacillus strains settle across the room over about 2 to 3 weeks and keep working on the residue odor-causing bacteria depend on. The probiotic formula is MADE SAFE certified, and EnviroBiotics is PTPA parent-tested. Use as the label directs.
-
Air filtration
Supplementary. A HEPA air purifier filters the airborne fraction while the probiotic device works on surfaces, so between them you cover both.
After setup
What to expect.
- Probiotics settle across a room in about 2 to 3 weeks.
- Fresher-smelling bedding, sofas, rugs and pet beds as fewer odor-causing bacteria build up.
- Musty, pet and cooking odors addressed at the surface instead of masked with fragrance.
- No filters, no fragrance, no ozone, and a cartridge change every 90 days or so.
- A layer that keeps working between cleans, alongside humidity control, washing and vacuuming.
- 30 days from delivery to try it, with free returns.

Start in the bedroom
You spend a third of your life in the densest dust mite habitat in your home. Start there: wash bedding hot, keep humidity in range, and let probiotics settle into the mattress and linens.
Common questions
Frequently asked.
What is the fastest way to reduce dust mite allergens?
Wash bedding weekly in hot water, 130°F or above, and encase mattresses and pillows in allergen-barrier covers. Keep bedroom humidity toward the lower end of the 40 to 60 percent range. Between washes, an EnviroBiotics device adds probiotics to the mattress and bedding; in a 2024 controlled study, Indoor Biotechnologies recorded a cumulative decrease in dust-mite, pet-dander and mold allergens over 8 days.
Does an air purifier help with mold?
A HEPA air purifier can capture airborne spores, but it doesn't reach mold on surfaces. Moisture control does the heavy lifting there. EnviroBiotics probiotics work on surfaces, on the organic residue that builds up on soft furnishings.
What if I have active mold right now?
Fix the moisture source first: leaks, ventilation, humidity. You can clean small patches on hard surfaces with vinegar. For visible mold covering more than about 10 sq ft, or mold inside walls or ducts, call a professional remediator. A probiotic device does not remediate mold. Use it alongside cleaning on the soft surfaces in the room.
Can I use an EnviroBiotics device if I have pets?
Yes. Pet beds, rugs and sofas collect dander and pet odor, and the probiotics work on that residue in place. The controlled study recorded a cumulative decrease in pet-dander allergens, and you don't have to rehome anyone. Use as the label directs.
What certifications does EnviroBiotics have?
EnviroBiotics makes its devices under an ISO 9001 quality system, and they are PTPA parent-tested. The probiotic formula is MADE SAFE certified. EPA Reg. No. 94339-1. The probiotics are natural Bacillus strains found in soil and plants. Use as the label directs.
What humidity level is best for mold and dust mites?
Aim for 40 to 60 percent relative humidity. Mold struggles to take hold when humidity stays under 60 percent, and dust mites do less well toward the lower end of that range. Put a hygrometer in problem rooms so you can keep track.
The bottom line
Allergens settle in. You can do something about it.
Each layer handles a different part of the problem. Together they make your home a harder place for allergens and odor to build up: drier, cleaner, and with probiotics working on the soft surfaces between cleans.
