What a HEPA Air Purifier Can't Remove
Quick answer: a HEPA air purifier does a good job of catching fine particles while they float through its filter. It does not remove odors (gases pass straight through a particle filter), and it can't reach the dust-mite allergen, pet dander and odor-causing bacteria that have already settled into your mattress, sofa and rugs. EnviroBiotics works on that settled layer.
HEPA basics
What a HEPA filter does well
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. To meet the US standard, a filter must capture at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size as air passes through it. That makes a well-sized HEPA purifier one of the best tools you can buy for airborne particles: smoke, fine dust, pollen drifting in from outside, and dander while it is still in the air.
Note the phrase "as air passes through it." A HEPA purifier works only on the air its fan pulls in. Dust and dander that land on a surface stay there until you, your kids or your pets stir them back up.
The gap
What a HEPA air purifier can't remove
Five common questions, with short, straight answers.
Does a HEPA filter remove odors?
No. Odors are gases, and a HEPA filter is a particle filter, so most smell molecules pass through it. Purifiers that help with smells add an activated-carbon stage. Even then, carbon works only on the air that reaches it. A smell that keeps coming back tends to start with odor-causing bacteria feeding on residue in your fabrics, and no filter can reach those.
Does a HEPA filter remove dust mites?
Very little. Dust mites live inside mattresses, pillows, upholstery and carpets, and their allergen particles are heavy enough to settle within minutes after you disturb them. A HEPA purifier catches them only in the short window after you make the bed or plump a cushion. Hot washing, mattress and pillow encasements, humidity control and HEPA vacuuming do more.
Does a HEPA filter remove pet dander?
Partly. The filter can catch dander floating in the air. Most of it sits in the sofa, the rugs, the bedding and the pet bed, and you stir some back up each time you sit down or your dog jumps on the couch. A filter sees only the airborne share.
Does a HEPA filter remove mold?
It can catch mold spores in the air. It can't touch mold growing on a damp wall, in grout or behind a cabinet. Handle mold as a moisture problem first: fix leaks, keep humidity between 40 and 60 percent, and call a professional for visible growth over about 10 sq ft.
Does a HEPA filter remove VOCs and cooking smells?
No. VOCs and cooking smells are gases. For those, ventilate, remove the source, or add an activated-carbon filter.

A different approach
How EnviroBiotics works on what HEPA misses
EnviroBiotics devices release natural probiotics, Bacillus strains found in soil and plants, as a fine mist. There is no filter in the device. The probiotics settle on the surfaces in the room, soft ones most of all: mattresses, bedding, sofas, rugs, carpets, curtains and pet beds.
There they feed on the organic residue (dust, dander, shed skin, food traces) that odor-causing bacteria depend on, and take up the space those bacteria would use. This is competitive exclusion. You end up with fewer odor-causing bacteria on the surfaces where odor lives, and a home that smells fresher without fragrance.
In a 2024 controlled study, Indoor Biotechnologies (Cardiff, UK) applied the EnviroBiotics probiotic over 8 days and recorded a cumulative decrease in dust-mite, pet-dander and mold allergens, with a parallel simulation at EMSL Analytical (New Jersey). The study measured allergens on surfaces, so read it as an environmental result, not a medical one. See the research.
Give the probiotics about 2 to 3 weeks to settle across a room. Keep up your regular cleaning; the probiotics work alongside it, not instead of it.
Side by side
HEPA air purifier vs EnviroBiotics
| HEPA air purifier | EnviroBiotics | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A fan pulls air through a fine mechanical filter | Natural probiotics settle on surfaces and outcompete odor-causing bacteria |
| Airborne smoke, pollen, fine dust | Yes, its main strength | No, it has no filter |
| Odor in sofas, beds and rugs | No | Yes, its main job |
| Settled allergens on surfaces | Only when stirred back into the air | Works where they settle (see the 2024 study) |
| Gases and VOCs | Only with an added carbon stage | No |
| Fragrance and ozone | None for true HEPA units | No fragrance, no ozone |
| Upkeep | Replacement filters | No filters; cartridge lasts up to about 90 days |
| Noise | Depends on fan speed | BioLogic Mini runs under 25 dB |
The two do different jobs: HEPA cleans the air and EnviroBiotics works on surfaces. For the full head-to-head, read our probiotic vs HEPA air purifier comparison.
The best setup
Use both: HEPA for the air, probiotics for the surfaces
If you already own a HEPA purifier, keep it. Add an EnviroBiotics device to cover the surfaces it can't reach. Place the probiotic device across the room from the purifier's air intake, so the filter pulls in less of the mist and more of it settles on surfaces.
BioLogic Mini
Up to 300 sq ft. Under 25 dB, cordless or USB-C. Bedrooms, home offices and small rooms.
$98Biotica 800
Up to 800 sq ft. Plug-in. Living rooms and open-plan spaces.
$299E-Biotic Pro
Connects to your HVAC ductwork for whole-building coverage up to 25,000 sq ft. Works alongside your furnace filter.
By quoteWhich one do you need?
Start with HEPA if
- Wildfire smoke or outdoor pollution gets into your home
- Seasonal pollen drifts in through windows
- You want to clear fine dust from the air fast
Add EnviroBiotics if
- A smell keeps coming back after cleaning
- Pet odor lives in the sofa, rugs or pet bed
- A bedroom, basement or closet smells stale even after you air it out
- You run a HEPA purifier and still notice stale, musty or pet smells
- You want no fragrance, no ozone and no filters to replace

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a HEPA air purifier get rid of smells?
Not on its own. A HEPA filter captures particles, and most odors are gases that pass through it. Purifiers that help with smells add an activated-carbon filter. Smells that keep coming back tend to start with odor-causing bacteria in fabrics, which no air filter reaches. EnviroBiotics works on those surfaces.
Can a HEPA filter remove dust mites?
Only a little. Dust mites live in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and carpets, and their allergen particles settle within minutes. A HEPA purifier catches them only after something stirs them into the air. Hot washing, encasements, humidity control and HEPA vacuuming do more, and EnviroBiotics probiotics settle into the bedding and soft surfaces where the mites live.
Can I use EnviroBiotics and a HEPA purifier together?
Yes, and the two pair well. The HEPA purifier handles airborne particles and EnviroBiotics works on surfaces. Place the probiotic device away from the purifier's air intake so more of the mist settles on surfaces.
Is EnviroBiotics a HEPA alternative?
It's a complement more than an alternative. If your main problem is smoke or pollen in the air, a HEPA purifier is the right tool. If your problem is odor or allergens settled in soft furnishings, EnviroBiotics reaches what a HEPA filter can't.
Does a HEPA filter help with mold?
It can capture airborne mold spores, but it can't reach mold growing on damp surfaces. Fix the moisture first: leaks, ventilation, and humidity between 40 and 60 percent. For visible mold over about 10 sq ft, call a professional remediator.
How often do I replace a HEPA filter or an EnviroBiotics cartridge?
HEPA filter schedules vary by model and use, so follow the manufacturer's guidance. An EnviroBiotics cartridge lasts up to about 90 days, and there are no filters to replace.
